I have a question: Once the canvas is gessoed, and a graphite drawing done, what can seal the graphite so it will not smear and dirty the paint on top of it in acrylic? Also, what would cause the ac not to take after application?
    Thanks for your input.

I use hairspray – aqua net unscented extra hold – as that was recommended to me back in the day, and it has served me well. Spectrifix by Degas is supposed to be good. it is a casein (milk) based product and works with a pump, rather than a spray. That would be my only hesitation. I've never used it.

Practice spraying, several light coats to get the feel. I use Golden acrylics and when you paint you can't tell which has spray and which doesn't it feels the same, looks and sticks the same. I've used it over charcoal, graphite, chalk, pastels…

U can use a more diluted layer of gesso as well. Just water the gesso until it feels like what you would do to make a glaze of a paint.

I would use fixative in spray that contains shellack, not hairspray. IMO is better to use a product made for that specific use and that will endure lifetime of your art. The gesso layer will reduce the visibility of your base drawing. If you want it to be visible but not bleed, use transparent acrylic medium after the fixative.

I put a lightly thinned Golden gloss medium over my drawings. You have to use a soft brush (preferably a 1″ or more flat) so you don't disturb the graphite. It has the added benefit of sealing the support against a water drop eating through to the canvas.
